That's when you see it. A breathtaking view of the valley below, with endless possibilities stretching out before you.

This is the power of inspiration. It gives us the energy and motivation to keep moving forward, even when the path is difficult.

Inspiration is critical for daily motivation, consistency, and persistence during your job search.

When you’re looking for a new job, it’s easy to get bogged down, discouraged, and lost.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably already started questioning yourself; doubting your abilities. You may feel like you’re never going to find the right fit.

You’re not alone. I’ve been there.

The “Flood Your Feed” Technique

I developed this technique 8 years ago when I wanted to break into tech.

I knew nothing about the industry, and decided to absorb as much as I could, as quickly as humanly possible.

Goals:

1. Daily Inspiration: Get inspiration from from multiple sources so that your mission, job search is always top of mind.

2. Stay Informed: One of the most important things you can do during your job search is be hyper-informed the latest industry news, topics, and discussions.

Here’s how to start:

1. Subscribe to 5-10 Newsletters

Find 5-10 newsletters in the field you’re interested in. Subscribe to each one of them. You’ll get weekly inspiration, the latest industry news, and ample topics of conversation to bring up when you connect with people.

Pro-Tip: When you subscribe to your newsletters, if you use Gmail, instead of simply putting in your email, add this little hack.

[youremail][email protected]. For example, my email is [email protected]. In Gmail you can add a “+” after the name and it still be delivered to the same place.

What I put in is “[email protected]”

Then in Gmail create a filter rule where all the emails go to a desired folder so you have them all neatly in one place.

2. Find + Follow 20 Industry Influencers

Who are the biggest names in your field?

Make a list of 20 people. Then follow them wherever you hang out (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) to see their posts, content, and conversations come up in your feed every single day.

Not sure where to start? Google “List of top [Industry / Topic] influencers”

4. Find 6-7 Exciting Industry Events

Signing up for the biggest industry events gets you excited for something big and fun. (If you weren’t around yet, I shared a story about this 2 weeks ago in a previous newsletter)

Google “Top [Industry] Events in [City/State]”

If you live in a small town or suburb type in the larger City/State/Province.

Still having trouble? Here are a few ideas.

1. Eventbrite.com 

2. Meetup.com 

3. Facebook Events

4. Confs.Tech

Pro Tip: If the event costs money, and you can’t afford it. Ask to volunteer.

Volunteering is like a VIP backstage pass. You get to meet all the influencers, speakers, and event organizers (who are hyperconnected in the industry).

Go above and beyond - get noticed - it will pay off.

5. Find 3-4 Online Communities

Where do your people hang out? Go find them, see the discussions that come up. Get engaged.

1. Slack Communities

2. Discord Communities

3. Reddit Communities

4. Facebook Groups

5. LinkedIn Groups

6. Polywork

You can Google, “best _____ communities online”

You can also check awesome websites compile communities around the world.
